Ben Reilly has been back for five problems in his very own solo title and we are finally going to find out what occurs once the two Scarlet Spiders are in the exact same room at the same time. Kaine, in case you remember, isn’t too pleased with his cloned brother, because Clone Conspiracy finished, and how else do brothers settle problems than with fisticuffs…its science people. So strap on in, jump inside, and discover out what happens if you combine Scarlet with Scarlet Spoiler: mostly a scarlet damn (rather than in the English way) great time.
Our issue picks up with the two cloned brethren, Ben & Kaine, going at it on the Vegas skyline continuing last problems cliffhanger. They eventually swing themselves via a set of windows, into a Medieval times themed institution, resulting in a couple interesting scenarios down the line. I am here to put my foot down and say Medieval Times in actual life is one hell of a moment.
Anyhow, moving out of the fight, we check in on the other series regulars, Cassandra Mercury along with her bodyguard Slade, walking into a ferocious Asian themed casino round city. The two are quickly confronted by a large security force of ninjas, forcing Cassandra and Slade to blend it up on the spot, showing Cassandra has some fighting abilities she has been hiding from us the readers…she more than meets the eye, even if you will…forgive me that I only watched the new Transformers (do not ask why).
Checking back in on Ben and Kaine, both Scarlet Spiders refuse to stop, and continue their brawl during this ‘Medieval Times’ palace, eventually stumbling into the arena, where two ‘knights of their acting table’ training session is disrupted. Kaine, after fighting off a sword attack, is able to have the upper hand on Ben, choking out him with vigor, all before the Black Knight comes storming in interrupting Kaine’s attempt at murder, allowing Ben an opportunity to escape for some time and compose himself.
Kaine chases Ben down to a local museum where Ben traps Kaine facing him with a gun. This scene plays out at a strange manner with Ben pitching the loading gun to Kaine who quickly pulls the trigger shooting the gun at Ben. Ben is able to grab the bullet coming to a compromise with Kaine that will enable Kaine his vengeance and kill Ben but just after he’s healed Cassandras daughter, to that Kaine agrees.
The issue concludes with Cassandra and Slade confronting the casino owner of this location they entered at the onset of the situation. We get a small double reveal here because this casino owner isn’t only revealed to be behind the attacks on Cassandra’s own casino but can also be Cassandra’s brother to boot…while it may be an interesting development to a I’m not digging Cassandra as a character much so that I could do without the additional improvement. With that being said it’s not something which detracts from the total problem quality.
Overall Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider continues to be an intriguing enough B level ‘spider’ book to hold my attention and keep me coming back to for more. Peter David has found a great footing with these characters and is mixing a good blend of comedy, action, and narrative developments together so things never feel dull any issue so far. The art by Bagley has been suburb and is really improving each matter so far, it’ll be a pity to see off him to Venom in the near future.
